I was excited to read this. I've seen a lot of people recommending it on social media so when it was immediately available on Libby, I snatched it up. I wasn't sure about it when it started but it only took a chapter or two to hook me. I love a world that has color for strata and the mix of mythology was definitely welcome. It's just enough to satisfy my nerdy desire for allusion while separating itself enough to create its own system. Darrow is a likable character forced into a situation that requires some tough decisions and he doesn't always make the right ones. It's reminiscent of The Hunger Games but with a dark academy element. You never really climb out of the hole that Brown has put you in but you're not sure you want to, especially since the glimmers of light that he sends your way are alternatingly tantalizing and blinding. I am eager for what's coming next.
