![]() I enjoy a memoir every so often. This is not exactly a memoir. It's the story of a girl working her way up through.a mostly man-dominated field: hospitality. Cooperstein talks about her experiences at two different hotels in Philadelphia, detailing the challenges and successes that lead not only to her expertise in the field but her development as an individual. She chronicles the characters of the story in such a way that the reader is given snapshots of hotel life, one in a fully established and famous building and one from the ground up. I found myself wanting to know more about her as a person (she does give us glimpses into her personal life as well) and was disappointed that the book was as short as it was. I am hoping for another volume. Cooperstein's conversational tone draws the reader in and makes you feel like you are there with this colorful cast. Even better to know that it's all real! 4.75/5

![]() This was my first Miranda Hart book and I was a little disappointed with it. Not that I think her writing is bad - far from it; she has all of the quirk and fun of her pattern of speech...it's just not what I was expecting from the content. Basically, it's her journey through overcoming personal issues and while I'm usually on board for that, it can feel a little preachy at moments. I don't think that's intended; rather, I think she's just particularly passionate about the methods used to overcome the pain she has experienced throughout her life. I think part of the reason I struggled with this book was that I had different expectations going into it - no fault of Hart's at all. I enjoyed hearing her voice in my head and I liked much of what she had to say once I got past the idea that this wasn't meant entirely for humor. It makes me want to go back and read some of her earlier works. I really enjoy her work as an actress and creator and I remain a fan - especially considering what she has endured to be where she is. 4.25/5 |
