#1 - The Crucible
This novel sits perfectly in the Venn diagram of Greek mythology meets The Hunger Games and I loved every minute of it. Especially coming on the heels of RED RISING, I feel like I'm on a Greek gods kick and I'm not mad about it. Abigail Owen has created a feisty heroine that has no problem speaking out against injustices that hurt her friends, despite the fact that she is "unlovable." The curse is potentially the only weak point in the novel; despite the fact that she constantly says she suffers from this curse, people do seem to care about her. We don't have enough of her backstory to see how she has been ignored throughout her childhood. Perhaps that will be addressed in the next book. I was surprised a few times at Owen's portrayal of some of the gods - there aren't always the usual suspects for mischief and mayhem - and the gauntlets the characters run are inventive and captivating, as are the rewards. The relationship between Lyra and her patron is well-developed and worthy of the romantasy label it holds. I can't wait for the next one.
