#1 - Earthseed
First of all, read by Lynne Thigpen? Sign me up. Lauren is living in a post-apocalyptic California with her community behind walls and gates but there is no safety and she finds herself on a physical and spiritual journey before long. She develops a faith called Earthseed that believes that "God is change." This is my first Octavia Butler and it will not be my last. The timing of this book is...ominously impactful. It's a dystopian America in full decline during the years 2024-2027. To think we are potentially living that decline...I won't dwell upon it but Butler certainly seems prescient. I do love a well-written dystopian novel (I think I mentioned I'm an Orwell fan in an earlier post). I thought the characters are well-developed and the story is both brutal and gentle. Butler navigates the path of crafted faith beautifully. I am curious to see what happens to Lauren and her following in the next book.
